Late April on the road…

So Iona is off on her travels again, our fifth outing this year. We are heading to Kinross to see our third gig of the year and, in early May, our fourth in Aberdeen. However, with a few days to fill before Kinross, we set out for the small seaside town of Aberlady on the East coast, roughly half way between Edinburgh and North Berwick on the Firth of Forth.
We left Glasgow in good time and were soon heading towards Edinburgh on the M74 out of town. However, no sooner were we on the motorway when the heavens opened and drenched the City (and the Central Belt, it seemed!) after a wonderful ten or twelev days of glorious heat and sunshine. It was a cruel reminder that we are still in Scotland in mid-April!

En route, we often faced that challenging situation when overtaking a truck and were smothered in spray, reducing visibility to next to ‘hee-haw’! However, this got worse on the Edinburgh By-pass where we encountered congested traffic caused by an accident. This resulted in us crawling along the motorway for about twenty miles which added about forty-five minutes to our journey. On the plus side, the weather improved as we drove into Aberlady and found the campsite which meant we could set up Iona in the dry, small blessings!
Once all was in order, we walked the half mile into the town. As bad luck would have it, en route, the rain began again in earnest, and we were glad to find the Old Aberlady Inn, where we found shelter, a pleasant libation, and an enjoyable evening meal. Our walk back to the campsite was under a gloomy sky, but we were thankful it was dry!
