The Song of the Week comes from a band that I first encountered as a twelve year old, way back in 1970. In fact, their album of that year, released on June 5th, was to be the first LP I bought! Fast-forward 54 years, and the band’s latest album, =1, provides our Song of the Week!
Inevitably, there have been a few changes in the band over the years. One members left; one died, and some left and rejoined years later! The current line-up has three of that 1970s group back in place: Ian Gillan, Ian Paice and Roger Glover. Jon Lord, who died on the 16th of July 2012, has been replaced by Don Airey, who has performed with Gary Moore, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Colosseum II and Jethro Tull, to name a few and Richie Blackmore has been replaced by Northern Irish guitarist Simon McBride, who was born nine years after my first LP was released, and eleven days before my 21st birthday! The album =1 is also the first on which he played guitar.
This week's choice comes from the band’s 23rd album, released in 2024, and is the fourth track. As with all the tracks, it was written by the band and producer Bob Ezrin. The song was also released as a ‘single’ on 30 April this year, four days after my 66th birthday!
So here it is, Portable Door by the everlasting Deep Purple!
