Iona’s Song of the Week this week comes from a guy we have been listening to since 2002 when we came across his debut platter, The Fine Art of Self Destruction. Over the years, we have seen this 57-year-old native from Queens, New York, perform live in Glasgow several times and have enjoyed his energetic musicality on each occasion. We even got to meet him and offer to buy him a beer in Cottier’s in Hydland the last time we saw him!
This week's choice has been prompted by the fact that he is about to release an album of his songs performed with or by other artists. These include Springsteen, Counting Crows, Dinasaur Jr., Graham Parker, Lucinda Williams, and Elvis Costello. The song Black Haired Girl is on this album featuring Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer from Green Day. However, we have returned to the 2007 Glitter in the Gutter album, on which the song first appeared, and we hope you enjoy the experience of listening to Jesse Malian.
Great choice, I love Jesse’s music, thanks.
