This week, for our Song of the Week, we go back forty-seven years to 1977. The song is the title track from the debut album by the Jamaican roots reggae band Culture, Two Sevens Clash.
I first heard the album on its release while working as a barman in Pitlochry, and it has been one of my favourites ever since. The album was recorded in 1976 in Kingston and the title song refers to the date 7th July 1977. The date was a prediction made by Marcus Garvey that there would be chaos on that date and schools, shops and businesses closed for the day in his Caribean homeland! There are a host of Reggae greats on the album, including Sly Dunbar on drums, Robbie Shakespeare on guitar and Lloyd Parks on bass, to name a few.
