Our next choice for Song of the Week is Bean Fields from the live album When in Rome… by the enigmatic ‘collective’ The Penguin Cafe Orchestra. The album was released in 1988, having been recorded in 1987 at the Royal Festival Hall, London, and this tune has always been a favourite of mine.
The band, formed by British guitarist Simon Jeffes and cellist Helen Liebmann, was an avante-garde ensemble who performed extensively during the 1980s and 1990s prior to Simon’s untimely death in 1997. Along the way there were some 33 members of the band who released eight albums over their 24 years, including two live albums.
Never heard of the PCO but really enjoyed this jaunty jingle!
