Iona’s Song of the Week - No. 13

Unlucky for some, but cool with us, and once again, we’ve trawled through our mental JukeBox to unearth another classic (in our humble opinion!), and this one goes back to 1992, although we first stumbled across this band in 1983 when they released their debut platter. Looking back on those ‘hazy, lazy days of summer’ we were pretty sure that the twelve songs on that album signified the start of something new, something different, something that would go ‘stratospheric’, and how right we were!

As a side note, our record collection includes a copy of this band’s very first 7” single, bought back in the mid-80s at a record fare for a mere £50!! Now worth somewhere in the region of £125 to £600, according to Discogs!

So, having been fans of this American band from Athens, Georgia (BIG HINT!) since the early days, it has obviously been pretty hard to pick one of their tunes, there really have been so many. However, despite some of our favourite songs coming from their first three or four albums, it was from their eighth platter that we picked this week's Song of the Week. The band really started to come to the rest of the world’s attention with their previous album, but they cemented their global fame on Automatic for the People. The album went on to sell over 18 million copies worldwide!

It is also strange to think that only three or so albums before this one, Michael Stipe diliberatlely obscured him lyrics! So, here is this week’s choice: R.E.M’s Everybody Hurts….

Ooft, R.E.M? Wow, I just love these guys and you picked a good un! I was lucky enough to catch them in Athens on a holiday back in the day and I, too, knew that they were destined to go big!
