This week’s Song of the Week was prompted by a Tweet I came across asking for a song with a great guitar solo. After some thought, I picked track 4, side two, from an album released on the 8th of April 1977. I was just about to turn 19 years of the age at the time! The album was the debut platter from a relatively unknown UK punk band called The Clash; however, the track I chose was not a Clash composition but rather was written by reggae artist Junior Murvin and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry!
The song also stood out for being 6:01 in length on an album which only had three other songs from the other thirteen tracks that were over three minutes, and even then, the longest of them was only three minutes and twelve seconds long!
Now, the ‘solo’ is so short that I don't know if it can actually be considered as one. However, it instantly struck a chord with me, and I have loved it ever since.
So here it is, and you can judge for yourself if this is a classic guitar solo; I still consider it so, especially considering it is from a punk, and it is, therefore, appropriately brief! Police and Thieves from the album The Clash:
Woo woo. I love the Clash and this song has always resonated with me, cheers
